Like me, many of you have young adults in your household attending college. If you are footing the bill for their scholarly pursuits, then you know the costs of sending children to college continue to rise at a rate of 8% – 15% per year. One of the ways I have found to save money is to rent textbooks. Average savings in our household, per semester, have been around $200. Buying textbooks on the internet has been around for a number of years and it provides substantial cost savings as well, however, you are stuck with the textbook at the end of the semester. Textbook rental is a relatively new service being offered by some of the major online textbook companies. The difference with textbook rental is you send the textbook back (in a pre-paid mailer) at the end of the semester and the cost of the textbook is much less than buying it new or used from your local college bookstore. Many times it is cheaper than buying the textbook from an online textbook retailer. A recent example of savings for one of my daughter’s books for a math class was: $138 (new), $104 (used), $55.50 (rental).
There are two companies covering most of the rental market: Chegg and CampusBookRentals. Other companies are beginning to offer rentals but these two online firms specialize in rentals. Here’s how it works:
Go to their site and enter the ISBN or name for the book you are trying to rent.
The site displays the inventory they have and the cost to rent for a quarter, semester, or summer session. You even have the option to change the return date which results in a different rental price.
Checkout and wait for your books (usually 7 to 10 days).
When you are finished with your book, login to the site and print a pre-paid return label (UPS) to return your books before the due date.
To find the best prices for both rentals and used textbooks, surf to the site: www.dealoz.com. This website allows you to enter an ISBN, Title, or Keyword for a textbook and it queries hundreds of websites to find online retailers selling or renting the textbook. You can sort by price (including shipping) to locate the lowest cost. This website has saved us approximately $2,500 during the 9 years we have had kids in college. If you compare the price we paid to new book prices, it is probably on the order of $5,000!
