First, I want to say thanks to my dear friends who constitute my devoted readership which is now up to 10 – or at least a couple of my friends take pity and look at my writing a couple of times and boost my numbers. First, my spousal equivalent, Tumbleweed. He believes in me and everything I undertake. Next, my huckleberry and my favorite author, Doc, who traipses up and down the east coast and gulf coast making sure the drinking needs of the South-East are fulfilled through the auspices of BUDWEISER. He’s the reason I’m doing this. Then there’s the Hippie Chick in St. Augustine, Ma Squaw in S.C., Mother-of-Tumbleweed way out in California… (Man. You’d think I’d travel more!) Thank you all for being there!
Now – on to the teacher stuff… I picked up my teacer edition text book today and finally got started on planning for the next school year. I already know which units will be taught during which weeks… Now I just have to figure out the specifics of what the kids are going to DO on each day… Kids these days are a tech-savvy bunch. Writing stuff out on the old white board (yes, I remember green chalk boards too!) just doesn’t cut it. They want video and interactive presentations on the Promethean Board. They are used to video games, social networking, cellphones that are more like appendages of their bodies than electronic devices. If I’m going to keep their attention, I have to do SOMETHING that is going to appeal to their media-controlled lifestyle. That opens up a lot of possibilities, really. I just need to get them on paper (or screen) and develop them.
Kids also want to move around the class to accomplish tasks. The worst thing you can do to a kid these days is force them to sit in one desk for an entire class period. They will go NUTS! Short attention spans and “ADHD” (real or imagined) make them jump from one thing to the next so it helps to have “work stations” where different parts of tasks can be done. The problem comes in when you have lots of kids in a small classroom and with precious little space for them to move around, and few if any materials with which they can work…
Wow! I’d better get busy with those plans! I’ll write more later…
Previous Anticipation…
