First Lady, Federal Agencies Launch Summer Initiative to Curb Childhood Obesity and Reading Loss
This is sad. As kids we were active during daylight hours – swimming, playing sports, bicycling etc, and at night we read books. No one told us what to do. We did what we wanted to do or rather what we could get away with. I don’t recall going back to school in the fall as being a dreadful time of not remembering where we left off before the summer vacation.
So what has changed? Are the kids learning at such a superficial level that they soon forget what they learn?
If a kid does not want to read, forcing them to read may turn them off completely. Do we have enough books, games or activities to offer kids something interesting to read? If a kid can’t read well, they are not going to try to read a book, there are so many other fun alternatives.
Michelle is trying to stop the “reading loss”.
First Lady and Congressional leaders packed Healthy Lifestyle Kits as part of the initiative that included activity equipment, healthy snacks, and books. The kits will be distributed to more than 3,000 young people.
This is about as effective as trying to stop unemployment by giving 3000 unemployed people a 3 month temp part-time job.
The long summer vacation is maybe the one perk all teachers would hate to lose, but it’s time to shorten it. A four quarter school year makes more sense.
But that option is not part of the plan. The teachers unions and the SEIU members want to keep their summers free.
Dept of Education:
We need every child to read at least 5 books this summer and every adult to help. We are really excited to help kick off Let’s Read. Let’s Move. and look forward to working with the Corporation for National Service and the rest of the Administration on this important initiative.
Dept of Interior:
This summer initiative, in collaboration with Let’s Move Outside!, provides parents the tools, ideas, and tips they need to get their families moving outdoors. Parents and kids are encouraged to bike through National Parks to improve endurance and balance, explore the country by hiking a local trail.
USDA:
Let’s Read. Let’s Move. will encourage America’s children to plant community gardens through the People’s Garden Initiative, and use volunteers to connect children with healthy foods and meals as part of the Summer Food Service Program. Toolkits provide individuals and organizations guidance on building community gardens and ways to volunteer to deliver meals to youth.
Reading thru that press release is like sinking in quick sand. Just when you think you have read enough about all these organizations working together, more of them are listed. After reading the whole article, I had an overwhelming feeling of being trapped in by endless government agencies and initiatives. How many versions of “Let’s move” initiatives are there by now?
Our poor kids. The carefree summer days are going to be gone. About a year ago, Obama signed The Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education Act, known as the GIVE Act.
Section 120 of the bill discusses the “Youth Engagement Zone Program” and states that “service learning” will be “a mandatory part of the curriculum in all of the secondary schools served by the local educational agency.”
The legislation also states that a commission will be set up to investigate, “Whether a workable, fair, and reasonable mandatory service requirement for all able young people could be developed, and how such a requirement could be implemented in a manner that would strengthen the social fabric of the Nation and overcome civic challenges by bringing together people from diverse economic, ethnic, and educational backgrounds.”
H.R. 1388
After a year, how much has this bill changed the lives of our youth? So far Michelle’s initiatives “encourage” kids to do what she does not do herself, and encouragement most likely will not be enough. It will be easy for the Obama admin to change “we need” to “they must”.
