In both Connectivism and Social Learning, students make connections though their environment to better understand a topic. A teacher’s roll, after the planning, of course, is more of a guide throughout a lesson. I have seen this instructional strategy used throughout the grade levels to suit different needs. Students who have learning centers in their classes (lower grades) use cooperative learning and peer teaching strategies for activities. Upper elementary use also utilize cooperative learning and peer teaching strategies for projects.
In my own educational experience, it wasn’t until I began my educational courses in college – I actually was in the classroom – where I can remember the experience of social learning and connectivism learning. The master’s courses that I am currently taking, as well, present social learning and connectivism theories. Even though, I am not attending a classroom, I have learned so much from fellow students in the courses. It is a learning experience that has had a greater impact on my learning because I am learning from others, hearing ideas about education, and applying educational practices each day in my own classroom that I have learned from others.
Social Learning Based Technologies sites I visited:
Social Networking in Plain English just reiterated the old saying, “It’s not what you know; it’s who you know.” Not a fair way to judge people for a certain job, but it happens all the time. http://www.commoncraft.com/video-social-networking
The information on the Google Docs seemed like a really good choice for business documents and student documents that had collaboration efforts. This would be nice for “class pen-pals” to work on a certain topic together. http://www.commoncraft.com/video-googledocs
Facebook is a great way to keep up with family and friends but personally, I find once I get on, I find it hard to get off – I try to limit my time here. The same for SecondLife.com – although I was intrigued with the thought of being able to virtually visit other places (the castles were the ones I could get lost in) I felt this would take valuable time to explore. This would be nice for older students to explore given a time limit.
I found webquest.org interesting in that I can look up books that I may need in class (currently looking for alphabet books and number books). This was nice!
At NASA Quest Planetary Flight – I found information on hot air balloons (on Mars). I found this interesting because here in New Mexico we have the Balloon Fiesta going on at this time and there was information on the history of balloons which would be a great lesson for this time of year and the scientific learning would make a greater impact on students in this area because of the Balloon Fiesta.
I liked the Jigsaw strategy (peer teaching) where each member of the collaborative team is responsible for learning information and teaching it to teammates. (Laureate, 2009) Dr. Orey explains that teaching others helps the learner develop a deeper understanding of the content.
