Today is my last day at OAR! I am sad to leave, but ready to move ahead! I wanted to take some time and talk about some apps on my iPhone that I have really come to appreciate for the world of special education! These have really benefited me and are useful tools that are versatile and portable, which is always very important because you never know when you will need them most!
Hidden Curriculum–Adult and Child. This is a great resource to use when working on social skills for children and even adults. Each day, a new social scenario is given that touches on relationships, the community, money, the workplace, and many other important social factors.
iReward. This is a motivational rewards chart right on your iPhone that will enhance the whole idea of positive reinforcement. It is a very interactive tool for children to use and provides great feedback!
iHomework. This organizational tool keeps track of homework, tests, quizzes, and other assignments.
Time Reading. This app provides a reading passage for grades K-4 with a timer on it.
BrainPOP. This application originates from the educational site, BrainPOP.com, and gives children a video of the day plus a short quiz on the educational material.
iPuzzle Words. This application will help kids to learn and identify words using beautiful and fun cards. They play with puzzle tiles and form the correct words with them based on the images presented. They can do it based on the images or the actual letters.
PopMath. This is a great game to use as an alternative for math drills. Children must match math fact bubbles and “pop” them.
Math Drills. This tool can be used for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division math drills.
Pizza Fractions. This interactive game works on the basics of fractions using the classic pizza pie!
Percentally. This is the best app for keeping data on children for educational and IEP goals.
Proloquo2go. This is a great portable alternative to a pricey AAC communication device. Although it is $189.99, any other communication device or program software such as Boardmaker are one of the necessities in the classroom. This app is a full-featured augmentative and alternative communication solution with natural sounds, a default vocabulary of over 7,000 items, and easy expansion.
Well, there you go! These are all of my favorites so far! I have found so many more, though, and would love to share this site with you, which gives hundreds of other useful apps for the world of special education:
